Issue was how to retain key employees How do you retain key employees while building stronger teams and improving business performance? The issues Global manufacturer Thomas & Betts has enjoyed phenomenal growth, expanding from 3,500 employees to almost 20,000 in the last decade. While some was core growth, most came from mergers and acquisitions, as many as six per year. Recently, the acquisitions, mergers and a few divestitures generated higher than acceptable levels of attrition. Retention rapidly became a top priority. The 102-year-old manufacturer of electrical components is now striving to build unity across national borders and company lines. It is looking for ways to bring employees, customers (distributors), and their customers (end users) together to achieve success. The solution Thomas & Betts felt that the learning points in Celemi's Tango™ simulation would play a critical role in these efforts. Employees must complete either Celemi's original, board-based version or the electronic equivalent TangoNet™ as a prerequisite for more targeted training programs, such as those for customer service, succession planning or performance appraisal. Mr. Bodam finds these targeted sessions have greater meaning when participants first understand the impact their decisions have across the entire organization. "TangoNet's electronic format effectively accommodates different styles and rates of learning, combining facets of independent learning with the guidance of a facilitator-led session," continues Mr. Bodam. "The interactive technology provides instant feedback. When used in real-time over the Internet it can help companies reach more people at multiple sites and compress learning cycles." Mr. Bodam credits TangoNet with having a major impact on attrition in a short time. On-time performance appraisal and salary action figures are improving. Managers are now more cognizant of who they need to develop and promote, and they understand the impact of losing people through attrition.
